Botulinum Toxin A / Botox and Xeomin

What Can I Expect? Many of the wrinkles we see on our faces are due to the dynamic facial expressions we perform every day, often without conscious awareness. Botulinum Toxin A is a purified protein that works by weakening or relaxing the muscles of facial expression which insert into the surface of the facial skin. Once the resting tone of these muscles is weakened, the pulling action of these muscles relaxes and the skin flattens out. Fine lines and wrinkles begin to soften and in many cases are eliminated. The toxin takes two to 10 days to take effect and lasts between three to four months in most individuals, but can last longer. The toxin is most effective for wrinkles in the upper third portion of the face such as the forehead lines, crow’s feet and the frown lines between the eyebrows. You will feel a small amount of discomfort when the needle pierces the skin and when the toxin is injected. This will last for only a few seconds. There are no serious side effects associated with the use of the toxin since we use relatively small doses. Botulinum Toxin A has been shown to be safe and effective even when higher doses are used on patients with other medical disorders with good results for over 20 years. Some studies have shown that side effects can be caused if the toxin migrates from the injection sites. For this reason, we ask that you do not rub or massage the area of the injections for at least two to three hours after the injections. These possible side effects include a small droop of the eyebrow, upper eyelid or lower eyelid. Fortunately, if this occurs, it is temporary but may last for a few weeks. Also, for this reason, we suggest you plan your future Botulinum Toxin A appointments two weeks before a special event. Botulinum Toxin A is used to enhance your appearance and does not take the place of other facial procedures such as facelift, blepharoplasty or laser resurfacing if this is what you need. Botulinum Toxin A is often used in conjunction with these procedures as well as dermal filling agents like Juvederm, Radiesse and Belotero. When the toxin wears off, you will notice a gradual return of the wrinkles. Often, when the wrinkles return they are not as deep as they were before. Some studies show that with regular repeated injections you may maintain your fresh, relaxed, wrinkle-free appearance for longer periods of time.

BOTULINUM TOXIN POST – TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

These guidelines are recommended to prevent the possible side effect of ptosis (droopy eyelid) and maximize to your desired effect. No straining, heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for four hours following your treatment. Do not lie down or bend over for four hours following your treatment. Avoid massage and manipulation of the area for four hours following treatment. This includes not doing a facial, peel or micro-dermabrasion after your treatment. A facial, peel or micro-dermabrasion can be done in the same appointment only if they are done before the Botulinum Toxin injection. Facial exercises in the treated areas are recommended for one hour following treatment to stimulate the binding of the toxin. Apply makeup as desired. Please avoid glycolic and retinoic acid products for 24 hours after your treatment. You may begin to see results of your treatment in only a few days, however typically it can take up to 14 days to take full effect. If this is your first time receiving a treatment with us, it is recommended that you schedule a two week follow-up appointment to ensure that you had the desired effect and to tailor any future treatments. You may experience some of the following after your treatment: mild and temporary redness or swelling of the injection site, mild headache or mild bruising. Although, very rare, a droopy eyelid can occur. Please call our office with any questions or concerns about your treatment. To reach Kelly or Kim or their assistant, please call 816.746.5333.

DERMAL FILLER PRE – TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

In an ideal situation it is prudent to follow some simple guidelines before treatment that can make all the difference between a fair result and a great result by reducing some possible side effects associated with the injections. We realize this is not always possible; however, minimizing these risks is always desirable. Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood increasing risk of bruising). Avoid anti-inflammatory / blood thinning medications. Please consult with your primary care provider before discontinuing these medications. Medications and supplements such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and other NSAIDS are all blood thinning and can increase the risk of bruising/swelling after injections. Schedule your appointment at least two weeks prior to a special event. Please come to your appointment without makeup and with clean skin to decrease the risk of infection or discoloration of the skin. You will have access to our locker rooms to reapply makeup if desired.

DERMAL FILLER POST INSTRUCTIONS

Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the injection site after your treatment to help reduce swelling. If swelling or redness is severe, or you develop skin color changes or ulceration to the injection site, notify us immediately at the Spa at 816.746.5333. DO NOT take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or NSAIDs for discomfort. Please take Tylenol (acetaminophen) to reduce the chance of bruising. Continue to avoid alcohol for 24 hours after your treatment. It is normal to feel “firm” at your injection site for the first few days after your treatment. Over time, the area will soften, leaving you will a natural result. Most side effects are mild and should resolve within seven days. The most common include: temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain, swelling, lumps, bruising, itching and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection. If you have a sudden increase in pain, redness or develop a fever, please call our Spa. You may return to your normal routine and activities immediately, however avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day. Avoid sleeping, laying or putting pressure on the injection site for five to seven days. Makeup may be applied as desired. Be careful to apply gently and avoid rubbing the injection site. You may gently wash your face a few hours after treatment. Avoiding aggressive scrubbing or rubbing. Sunbathing or UV lamp exposure should be avoided until the redness or swelling has resolved. If you have previously suffered from cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another occurrence. Please notify us at the time of treatment if you get cold sores more than two times in a year and we will treat you appropriately. We recommend a follow-up appointment in 10-14 days following your treatment. Spa charges and policies are subject to change without notice.
